About The University of Sheffield
According to the Daily Telegraph (a national newspaper) the University of Sheffield is one of the top ten British universities. British universities are now ranked according to the quality of their teaching and research. 18 of our departments were rated excellent for research, fifth highest. On teaching 17 departments rated excellent, the highest number of any University in the UK.

There are more than 20,000 students studying in the University's departments and research centres. The University is very popular with overseas students - there are nearly 3,000 from 101 different countries.

About EABS
EABS is a part of the University of Sheffield specialising in running study programmes for young people between 15 and 24 years of age. Our courses are short (typically two or three weeks long) and non-degree. They give young people the opportunity to study and develop themselves in our international University environment. Our staff are all highly qualified and have many years of relevant teaching experience, particularly of teaching to younger students.

About Sheffield
Sheffield is a large city of half million inhabitants which lies at the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park. It is in the middle of the UK and enjoys an international reputation as a conference and tourist centre. Sheffield has a friendliness and community spirit recognised throughout Britain. It has all the facilities one would expect from a large city including: theatres; cinemas; classical and pop concert venues; Olympic standard sporting venues; and one of the largest and most modern shopping centres in Europe.

About the Programme
Our proposed programme is designed to give participants the opportunity to:
  • Improve their English language
  • Experience life at a British university
  • Enjoy visiting British cities, participating in events that are special to this part of England, and meeting other nationalities.

The programme includes: studying English language in university-style small classes (our own teachers will work in close liaison with your English language teachers); lectures and seminars on other topics; outdoor activities such as rock climbing or canoeing; visits to other places of interest such Liverpool and York.

We would like to accept 45 students in 1999 aged from 15 to 18. Accommodation will be in a university hall of residence. We estimate the programme will cost 660 pounds per student including all accommodation and trips etc.. Accompanying staff come for free.
